1) One of the oldest archeological sites in the state of Michigan is near Stony Lake in Napoleon.

 

2) Humans moved into Jackson County before anywhere else in Michigan, as Jackson was the first place in Michigan to become free of glacial ice.

 

3) An early group of Native Americans who lived in Jackson were the Assistaronnon, from which several other Native American tribes are thought to be descended.

 

4) A notable Native American chief named Wap-ca-zeek lived in the Spring Arbor area. He is remembered most for fighting in the War of 1812, during which he was injured and had his leg amputated.

 

5) There is a Native American burial ground located in Jackson County. It is now part of the Falling Waters Park in Spring Arbor.
