The City of Jackson has released the latest construction progress report and next week’s schedule.

What you need to know for next week:

• Concrete work continues on Michigan Avenue between West and First

• Park/Horton/Hickory intersection work almost ready for asphalt

• Three watermain projects slated for mid-September

• Kibby Road Project has begun, down to one lane in both directions

W Michigan Avenue between Brown and Steward (MDOT)

Work on this MDOT administered project to replace water mains, sewers, sidewalks and reconstruct the road with new curb and gutters and concrete pavement continues on schedule.

All water mains along the stretch of W. Michigan Ave. have been installed, and contractors have connected the main and sanitary sewer to homes and businesses along that stretch. Crews continue to pave the south side of the street beginning at Brown Street – with pavement and curbs completed from Brown to West Avenue.

Next week, contractors will work to replace curb and gutter and lay concrete pavement from West Avenue to First Street.

Crews are currently placing concrete at the intersection of Michigan and Steward, and continue to prepare the north side of the street for concrete. Traffic shifts will continue throughout the project, but access to businesses and homes remains open.

Kibby Road between West Avenue and City Limits

This project consists of

1) removal and replacement of the pavement on the south side of the Kibby Road boulevard with new gravel base and hot mix asphalt,

2) removal of the curb and pavement on the north side,

3) construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Kibby and Denton and

4) construction of a new non-motorized mixed-use trail with a concrete surface in the location of the former north side of the Kibby Road boulevard.

The project began Sept. 14 after lanes were closed in both directions. Currently, one lane is open in both directions as crews begin the work to reconstruct Kibby Road between the City limits and West Avenue.

The project will be constructed in two phases. Phase 1 will consist of water main replacement and trail construction in the fall of 2017. Phase 2 will consist of street paving and roundabout construction in the spring of 2018.

Park/Horton/Hickory Intersection

The project has begun, with portions of Horton Road and Park Road closed to through traffic as crews finish up the trail where it intersections the intersection and work to realign the intersection itself. The gravel base course for the intersection has been installed, with pavement base courses scheduled in the coming days.

Roughly three-quarters of the concrete curb and gutter is now complete, with crews beginning to grade the intersection for asphalt.

Various work set for this autumn

Projects along Jackson Street, between Franklin and Washington; Cortland Street, between Franklin and Washington; Michigan Avenue, between First and Blackstone; Dewey Avenue, between Clinton and Lansing; and Fleming, between Maquire and Blakely and portions of Steward Avenue are set for water main replacement and trench construction.

Projects have started except for Cortland, Michigan and Steward, which are set to begin Monday, Sept. 18 – all projects include replacing the watermain beneath the street and finishing with a patch seal, not a full reconstruction, following the infrastructure work.

Downtown Jackson Loop Two-Way Conversion

Crews continue to update the lighting signals along the downtown Jackson loop in preparation to convert the streets to two-way traffic with a middle turn lane. Work is expected to continue through November.

Beginning next week, MDOT is scheduled to close all but one lane on Louis Glick from Jackson Street to Steward Avenue in preparation of a watermain repair and replacement prior to repainting the loop and converting it to two-way traffic.

Franklin Street Two-Way Conversion

Originally scheduled to have lanes painted by Aug. 28, the City of Jackson is still waiting on pavement stripers to finish the project, and expects them to complete the striping of the street by the end of the month.
