The Michigan Department of Transportation will begin a number of construction projects in the city of Jackson this year designed to improve safety and traffic flow through the area.

The biggest of the projects, the reconstruction of West Michigan Avenue between Brown Street and Louis Glick Highway, will begin within the next two weeks once the final contract is awarded.  This $13 million project will include new concrete pavement, new street lighting, storm sewer upgrades, water main replacement, sanitary sewer upgrades, traffic signal modernization and a new sidewalk on the south side of Michigan Avenue.  On the north side of Michigan Avenue, a new 10 foot wide non-motorized path will be constructed.

According to MDOT Engineer Jason Pittman, traffic lanes will be built to the 11 foot wide standard, a slight increase over the current lane size.  The new road will occupy essentially the same footprint, but with the new non-motorized path there will be some trees removed.  Many of the trees slated for removal are not in good shape and MDOT will be planting approximately 100 new trees along the street.

At the same time, Louis Glick Highway and Washington Avenue, both one-way roadways, will be converted to allow two-way traffic.

Louis Glick Highway and Washington Avenue will be upgraded at intersections to allow for two-way traffic. That work will include intersection radius improvements, pavement marking upgrades, and traffic signal modernization.  The intersections where Steward, First, Michigan and Wildwood come together will see modifications as well as East Michigan Avenue and Cooper, at the train station.

East Michigan Avenue will also be getting improvements from Cooper Street to Dwight Street.  The road surface will be milled and repaved and sidewalk ramps will be installed at intersections.  Ramp construction will be done during daytime hours and milling and paving will be done at night.

During construction on West Michigan Avenue, one lane eastbound traffic will be open, with westbound traffic detoured along Wildwood Avenue and Brown Street.  During construction on Louis Glick Highway and Washington Avenue, at least one lane of traffic will be open in each direction. Work will be completed first on Washington Avenue, then a two-way traffic pattern will be used on Washington Avenue during the work on Louis Glick Highway.

An additional MDOT project in the city will involve repairs on North West Avenue between North Street to Boardman.  Crews will repair and replace joints that have deteriorated.  That project is scheduled for July and should take 3 to 4 weeks.  North West Avenue work will be done in overnight hours.
