On Monday, July 17, 2017, Jackson County Department of Transportation  crews will begin chip sealing roadways throughout the county. The department recently acquired new equipment to improve the chip seal process.  This process involves five steps:

(1) Application of asphalt oil emulsion (the “sealing oil”);

(2) Application of aggregate stone (the “chips”);

(3) Pressing/rolling the stones to compact and seat the chips, further “sealing” the surface and creating a wear surface;

(4) Removal of excess stones by street sweeping or brooming;

(5) Application of a “fog seal” emulsion (also called “chip lock”) which gives the roadway a black color and helps to further seal and secure the stones.

Paint striping is applied after the new surface fully cures.

The following roads will be open to local traffic only, while JCDOT crews are chip sealing Monday:

South Sandstone Road, from Michigan Avenue to McCain Road

McCain Road, from Reynolds Road to the West Summit Township Line

McCain Road, from the West Summit Township Line to Robinson Road

These projects are expected to be completed by the end of the day, weather permitting. Motorists should expect short delays. Please watch for flaggers and drive with caution when you see our work crews.
