Jackson College Jets baseball pitcher & outfielder Alex Manasa was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 11th round of the Major League Baseball draft today.

Manasa recently completed his freshman season with the Jackson College Jets (Jackson, Mich.). “It’s always been a dream of mine to be a professional baseball player,” Manasa said, thinking back to his childhood T-ball days. “I’m just so excited. My parents are excited, and my grandparents are excited.”

Manasa is a right-handed relief pitcher who finished with a 1.27 earned run average, 31 strikeouts and 3 base-on balls in 21 innings in his freshman season. Strong at bat as well, he hit .410 in 50 games and was second in runs batted in for the Jets. He received All-MCCAA (Michigan Community College Athletic Association) honors, All-Eastern Conference 1st Team, Eastern Conference All-Freshmen Team, and was the Eastern Conference Freshmen of the Year. This summer, he played for the Kenosha Kingfish in the Northwoods League, where he’s compiled four saves.

“Alex is a true leader, very humble, and comes from a great family,” said Jets baseball head coach Rick Smith. “He was and is definitely what we want here at Jackson College as a student-athlete on our baseball team. We’re pretty excited; it’s been a dream come true for Alex.”

Manasa, of Farmington, Mich., is a graduate of Farmington High School. He was 328th in the Major League draft. He will be in negotiations with the Pirates about whether to go with the team or return to school at Jackson College.

“I’d like to give a shout-out to all of my family members and friends to thank them for their support,” Manasa said.
