Jackson — Pitching and hitting and defense, oh my.

Okay, there’s no yellow-brick road on the path to a district crown, but Jackson High baseball coach David Nearpass understands what his team has to do once the playoffs launch next week.

The path, as it would be, is threefold.

“For large portions of the season, we’ve had two of those things going at once,” Nearpass said. “Now the challenge is having all three at their highest level. If we do that, we’ve got a pretty good chance to go on a run.”

And a run is what the Vikings have been on of late, winning five of their past six games leading into Thursday’s season-ending doubleheader with Sexton.

“We’ve been playing pretty well,” Nearpass said of his group, which is 19-12 on the year. “Like I said, we just need to get all three facets of the game clicking.”

Jackson is taking part in the Division 1 district hosted by Gull Lake.

The Vikings open against Battle Creek Central at 1 p.m. in a semifinal.

Jackson is 2-0 this year against Central.

“We pitched well and hit the ball,” Nearpass said of what was 13-3 and 19-0 wins. “We have to do the same this time around.”

On the other side of the bracket, Lakeview and Holt open on May 30, and the winner plays Gull Lake at 11 a.m. June 3.

The final is at 3 p.m. that same day.

“It’s win-or-go-home time, and these guys understand that,” Nearpass said. “Especially for the seniors, it’s their last go of it.”

Asked about Jackson’s last district title, Nearpass just said, “it’s been a long time, I know that.”

“But we’re excited,” he added. “We have a whole week to get ready. So we have to stay focused and stay ready.”
