ADRIAN, Mich. – First-year golfer Justin Kapke made an impressive debut in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tuesday.

The Plymouth High School product eagled the first hole – a par five – and that set the tone for the day. He scored a birdie on the 18th to finish as the medalist with a 2-under 69.

Overall, Kapke finished the day with the eagle and four birdies.

“Justin was incredible consistent off the tee, and controlled his irons well,” Albion Coach Jordan McArleton said.

Kapke is the first Albion golfer to win medalist honors in a MIAA Jamboree since Zach Benedict and Mark McLaughlin shot rounds of 73 at The Medalist Golf Club in Marshall in 2009.

Albion finished sixth in the team standings. The Britons 310 total was three strokes behind Kalamazoo College and Olivet College which tied for fourth.

Hope College and Calvin College (291) and Adrian College (298) were the top three teams.

Jim Chapman had an eagle and two birdies in his round of 80. Justin Leeds also shot 80 and Soti Michalos contributed a score of 81.

The second MIAA Jamboree of the fall is scheduled for Saturday at the Pine River Country Club in Alma.
