Columbia Central Football

Brooklyn — Last weekend was about history, a step taken that had never been taken before.

This weekend is about more of the same — and a little revenge.

The Columbia Central football team had made the state playoffs five times before last Friday’s Division 6 pre-district contest against Ecorse.

And all five times the Golden Eagles were at home watching in the district final round.

Not this time.

“It was a good game, and a good win,” coach Josh Kubiak said of a 24-0 victory, the first postseason win in program history. “Our defense had been struggling, but we got an Ecorse team with some great athletes that couldn’t get organized. We played a great game.”

The reward is a chance at the first district title in program history Friday night at home against Blissfield, a conference foe and very familiar opponent.

“I think all the pressure is on them,” Kubiak said of Blissfield, which comes in at 6-4 and beat Columbia 25-14 in Week 5. “We don’t mind playing a team again. They know us. We know them. There’s no surprises. There’s no scrambling to get ready.”

But if there’s to be a Week 11, things have to be different than the first time around.

“They controlled the ball and controlled the line of scrimmage in that game,” Kubiak said. “They had a good game plan, took our run away, and made us one demential.”

This time around?

“There are three basic things we have to do,” he added. “We can’t make the mental mistakes that hurt us. We have to make a few big plays when it’s made available to us. Lastly, when we need it, we have to have the kids reach down and find that heart. The first time we played them we were coming off a big win and had a let down at practice. That can’t happen this time around.”

Columbia, now 7-3 for the second year in a row and 22-8 during this three-year span of playoff appearances, will host the district final at 7 p.m.

“It’d be great,” Kubiak said of the chance to get another playoff win and advance to the regional round. “We’re on a run of three years of being in the playoffs. This team has a chance, even without the best record ever, to have an argument to say they are the best team ever. It’s the tradition were trying to build here, and these guys have a chance to add to it.”
