Art à Loan Exhibit returns to Ella Sharp Museum.  The Ella Sharp Museum is proud to host the Art à Loan exhibit again this fall. The Art à Loan program is designed to encourage young artists to share their talents with the Jackson community. Artworks from students in Kindergarten through 12th grade are selected by a committee to be professionally framed and displayed at the museum. Following the exhibit, the artworks are rented and displayed in public locations around Jackson County for one year.  This year Art à Loan is supported by Jackson Literary and Art Association and volunteer hours from Jackson Civic Art Association, I’ve Been Framed, and A Frame Above. A special thanks goes out towards local business’ who have rented a piece for 2018. Art à Loan is on display at the Ella Sharp Museum from September 17-October 15, 2017.

Yoga at Meijer Branch, Jackson District Library.  Every Monday and Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. and Friday at 8:30 am.  Join Yoga instructor Jeanette Lamphere and learn the basics of yoga.  Suggested donation $3. Intended for adults.  

Lux et Veritas Symposium at Jackson College, a college and community symposium on the topic of civility, today from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in Bert Walker Hall, Rooms 144 & 145.  Following high-profile events in the news, in politics and across the country on college campuses, Jackson College President Daniel J. Phelan called together a new task force earlier this year, Lux et Veritas, or light and truth. Lux et Veritas members are called to promote an inclusive, civil, diverse and secure campus for all students, staff, faculty and visitors. In deciding how to go about their charge, members have decided to host four symposia a year – two in fall, and two in winter. This first symposium will explore the concept of civility, while another in November will explore inclusion.  Professor Anthony Cleveland, psychology, will serve as moderator and will discuss the evolution of social morals. Other panelists will include Mary Jo Kennedy, student judicial officer and director of criminal justice programs; Elaine Themm, political science instructor; Lee Hampton, director of multicultural affairs; Del Belcher, social media specialist; and students Markyia Douglas, Anthony Forsythe and Nicole Cossum-Ready.  College and community members are welcome.  The event is free and open to the public.

The Michigan Theatre presents the film “The Prince of Egypt” at 7 PM.  The film will be followed by a talk by  Philip LaZebnik.  Free admission.  Doors open at 6:30 PM.  Philip LaZebnik has numerous film and TV writing credits, both in Los Angeles and Europe.  His credits include the screenplays for the DreamWorks animated feature “The Prince of Egypt” and Disney’s animated features “Pocahontas” and “Mulan”.  LaZebnik’s series television credits as writer-producer include Wings, Day by Day, The Torkelsons, and Almost Home. 

The Jackson Science Cafe will be at Grand River Brewery in Downtown Jackson.  Doors open at 5:15 PM, presentation begins at 6 PM.  The topic:  The Role of Gas Hydrates and a potential Energy Resource, a Geologic Hazard, and an Agent of Climate Change, presented by Dr. Timothy Collett, USGS Research Geologist.  The presentation will deal with the occurrence of gas hydrates, which are a solid form of natural gas and water which are believed to be an important future energy resource, and are considered to represent a geologic hazard and a possible agent o f climate change.  this presentation will review the contributions that scientific drilling have made to our understanding of the geologic controls on the formation, occurrence, and stability of gas hydrates in nature.  Sponsored by the JCISD, with appreciation to Grand River Brewery as host.

Family Storytime at the Carnegie Branch, Jackson District Library, Downtown Jackson.  Join us at the Carnegie Branch every Monday at 6 PM for stories, crafts and more. Intended for ages 0-7 and their families.
