Councilman Andrew Frounfelker filed to run for reelection as Jackson City Council representative of the 5th Ward.

“I’m running for reelection because I want to make sure that the 5th Ward and all the awesome people who live here have an experienced leader who is making a positive impact on the community” Frounfelker said.

The City of Jackson Clerk’s Office verified the incumbent’s petition for reelection Tuesday, March 21. The primary election is scheduled for Aug. 8; the general election is scheduled for Nov. 7.

Elected in 2005, Councilman Frounfelker is seeking a fourth term.

Frounfelker joins incumbent Dan Greer in filing reelection petitions.  Greer, representing the 3rd Ward, has been on the City Council since 1997.  He is the longest-serving council representative on the current council.

In a news release, Frounfelker stated that during his tenure, the community has experienced a renewed prosperity after the Great Recession and housing market collapse.

Since beginning his stint as a City Council member 12 years ago, Frounfelker pointed to his involvement in working  to improve the community through a focus on urban core growth and renewal, an effort that continues to improve the city of Jackson as a whole.

“Today, economic investment is on the rise – most notably in the 5th Ward”, Frounfelker said, citing “a number of exciting new developments in the ward including a new apartment complex on Louis Glick Highway, and the prospect of Commonwealth Associates moving their headquarters next door; the reinstallation of the famed Glidden Parker mural within a multi-use structure in Horace Blackman Park; and a marketable increase in construction permits across the community.”

“I will continue to focus the same attention I have toward the city’s core downtown neighborhoods – which make up the ward I represent,” Frounfelker said. “Rebuilding and repopulating our inner core neighborhoods are a top priority.”

“Growing our tax base with economic development activity is critical to help all of our residents by providing job opportunities, expanding our public safety measures and improving our blight issues within the Jackson community,” he added.

Two other council positions are up for election, including Mayor and 1st Ward Council Representative.  Incumbent Mayor Bill Jors has indicated in multiple public comments that he will likely seek re-election.  Incumbent 1st Ward Representative Arlene Robinson has not made any public announcement regarding a run for reelection.  Robinson is in her first term of office.

According to City Clerk/Treasurer Andrew Wrozek, several citizens have picked up nominating petitions.  The position of Mayor is a two year term, council seats are four year terms.  Council representatives for Wards 1, 3 and 5 are up for election this year, Wards 2, 4 and 6 in 2019.
