Concord Football Team 2016

Concord As has been the case nearly all season, there’s a certain significance with tonight’s district final for the Concord football team.

A year of program firsts can put another check in the record book should the Yellowjackets find a way to go to Homer and defeated one of their top rivals for a second time this fall.

“If we can win this game, it will be the most successful two-year span in program history,” coach Max Clark said. “It’s an exciting time for us. There’s some history to be made.”

And a district title to be won.

Concord (8-2) went 7-3 a year ago, equaling the highest win total for the program in two years, set in 2001 (10-3) and 2002 (5-5).

But this year’s team has plenty of experience with big games, and big wins.

The Yellowjackets won the first conference title in program history, and last week, knocked off rival Springport 21-14 for the first playoff win since 2001.

Now, the team faces a Homer (8-2) squad it edged 28-26 in overtime way back in Week 2.

“We expect close game, just like last time,” Clark said. “We did what we had to do in that one. We won the turnover battle. In overtime, we were able to convert a 2-point conversion, and they didn’t. It was that close.”

Homer is one of the hottest teams in the area right now.

The loss to Concord was the last time the Trojans found themselves on the wrong side of the scoreboard.

Since then, they’ve gone 8-0, averaging 41.1 points per game while allowing just 17.

Homer also has home-field advantage for the 7 p.m. kick.

“That’s always a tough place to play,” Clark said. Concord won there in Week 2. “We expect a huge crowd. There always is. It’s going to be packed. But i think we learned how to play there. This is a team that’s experienced on the road, that knows how to win on the road.”

Concord is 4-1 this season way from home.

The lone loss was to the same Springport team the Yellowjackets elimination last week.

And that win came about the same way Clark says this one has to, with his team playing solid defense (forced six turnovers) and making the most of its offensive chances.

“I’ve said it all season, we have to take care of the football,” he added. “But this is a very exciting time. It seems like every day we have new things going on,.team dinners, people showing up at practice. It’s like everyone just enjoys being a part of this right now.”
